Keeping everything behind the scenes running safely and smoothly A facilities manager is responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of a company or organization's real estate as well as its systems. Possible systems to be maintained will include the HVAC, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing as well as technology. Typically, the facilities manager will coordinate and manage a team of employees or contractors designated to maintain each operating system. Depending on the company or organization, responsibilities may include functional and operational design of the system itself and could require specific engineering training.

Every asset will have HVAC, mechanical, and electrical systems that must be constantly managed, serviced, and updated. The future challenge will be for facilities managers to stay abreast of all technological improvements to the operating systems and sustainability standards. It will be the facility managers who can most effectively manage the maintenance staff, maximize operational efficiency, and minimize costs who will be most successful. Industry Qualifications


  • High-School or Equivalent (Minimum)
  • College Degree in Engineering, Business, Finance, Management, or Marketing
  • CFM: Certified Facility Manager
  • LEED AP: LEED Accredited Professional designation from the USGBC
  • Experience in Property Condition Assessment (PCA)
