The Deputy Public Works Director manages and directs one of eight major divisions of the Public Works Department: Solid Waste Field Services, Solid Waste Customer Engagement Services, Solid Waste Disposal and Diversion, Fleet Services, Facilities Operations and Maintenance, Facilities Planning and Projects and Administrative Services.  Incumbents have full responsibility to manage personnel, operational budget, and capital infrastructure of their assigned divisions.  This position provides either front-line service delivery to 1.4 million residents or key support service for other city service systems.

Deputy Public Works Directors plan for the future needs of the department, other City departments, and the community by developing and presenting policy and operational recommendations to department and city management. This position also develops and implements programs, policies, and procedures for an assigned division and as a team member in broad program areas.  Assignments are broad in scope and require the use of independent judgment and initiative in making technical decisions and policy recommendations of considerable difficulty.  Incumbents in this job may rotate between divisions while maintaining a high degree of proficiency in assigned program responsibility.  Work is performed under the direction of an Assistant Public Works Director or the Public Works Director and performance is evaluated on the basis of results achieved. 

Currently one vacancy exists in in the Facilities Planning and Projects Division.  The focus of this position is related to Capital Planning, Asset Management, and Building Refurbishment Projects.  The Division resources include 121 employees with skilled craft and professional employees.  The position in the Planning and Projects Section supervises approximately 32 employees and manages an annual Capital Projects budget of approximately $14 million.  Activities in this division include responsibility for performing facility assessments, planning improvements, and executing projects at over 676 City facilities.

SALARY

Up to $128,003 annually.  Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications. The City contributes 8.5% of salary into 457/401(a) plans with no matching required. $3,360/annual car allowance and $1,200/annual cell phone allowance.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Five years of experience in capital project management, building construction, facilities management, solid waste services, equipment/fleet maintenance, civil engineering, architecture, and/or administrative services.
  • Three years of experience supervising professional and administrative staff.
  • Bachelor’s degree in business or public administration, engineering, or a related field.
  • An equivalent combination of relevant experience and education may be considered.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS include the job requirements listed above, plus:

  • Experience managing building renovation and rehabilitation projects in a public sector environment and/or managing a large number of skilled trades conducting work over a wide geographic area. 
  • Experience in project management of building improvements and the planning tools such as building asset management systems and facility assessments is preferred.
  • Experience in the development of Capital plans and managing multiple building projects simultaneously is desired.  
  • Professional certifications such as Project Management Professional (PMP) and/or Certified Facility Manager (CFM), or their equivalent are desired.
