JOB SUMMARY

Reporting to the Sr. Director of Real Estate, the Associate Director of Real Estate will provide strategic management, administration, and supervisory oversight for the Real Estate department. Based out of Gerlach, NV, this year-round position will serve as a key leader within the organization and be responsible for maintaining and growing Burning Man Project’s (BMP) real estate strategy in Northern Nevada.

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Scope will include three overarching areas of focus: (1) Property Development, Operations & Booking, (2) Local Services, (3) Acquisitions, Lease Administration, Permitting, Budgeting, Property Management & Maintenance. This role will support the Real Estate team in sourcing, originating, coordinating and implementing all aspects of the development process. Projects may include new construction, acquisition and rehabilitation, and programming. The Associate Director of Real Estate will also have responsibilities leading and administering assigned aspects of the Real Estate Department including revenue generation and realizing BMP’s mission and Sustainability Roadmap.

 

This role will lead the development of a mixed-income housing program that supports the needs of Burning Man Project employees as well the needs of a growing population in Gerlach. This program will be a signature social enterprise for Burning Man Project as well as generating revenue to support the organization.  

 

The Associate Director of Real Estate will cultivate and sustain strong working relationships within the department and work closely with other department leads (the Fly Ranch team, Government Relations, Philanthropic Engagement, Legal, Finance, BRC Operations, People Operations). They will interact regularly with Gerlach residents (including attending Gerlach General Improvement District (GGID) and Citizen Advisory Board (CAB) meetings) and be an advocate within the organization for the needs of the Gerlach, Empire, Hualapai, Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe, and northern Nevada communities as they relate to BMP and Real Estate activities. 

 

The ideal candidate for this position would be able to relocate and live full time in or close to Gerlach, NV. Applicants should possess thorough knowledge and demonstrated experience in leading and overseeing community and economic development and/or real estate development and major capital investment projects including site assessment, programming, acquisitions, financing, design, construction, and operations. Experience with inclusive growth, renewal energy and/or land trust is desirable. This role will require a strong understanding of property management, real estate law, and contract interpretation.

  • Documentation - Drives the creation, publishing, and maintenance of process documentation related to assigned duties.
  • Teaching - Takes a leadership role in the acculturation and training of staff. Teaches live or e-learning classes, as requested. Promotes a culture of teaching and learning throughout the community.
  • Mentoring - Mentors subordinates in acquiring the knowledge, skills, and experience that will allow them to advance in the organization. Aids, encourages, and inspires their team.
  • Training development - Collaborates with the education team to develop training materials in their area of expertise, as requested.
  • Learning - Pursues ongoing learning in their area of expertise, working to stay current on emergent knowledge, skills, and processes. Participates in conferences, forums, and networking events, where appropriate.
  • Speaking - Represents Burning Man as a subject matter expert and culture-bearer, as requested.
 

QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED

  • The ideal candidate for this position would be able to relocate and live full time in or close to Gerlach, NV. 
  • Bachelor's degree in real estate, finance, or business administration.
  • 5-7 years experience in real estate.
  • Applicants should possess thorough knowledge and demonstrated experience in leading and overseeing community and economic development and/or real estate development and major capital investment projects including site assessment, programming, acquisitions, financing, design, construction, and operations. 
  • Experience with inclusive growth, renewal energy and/or land trust is desirable. 
  • This role will require a strong understanding of property management, real estate law, and contract interpretation.

PREFERRED

  • Advanced degree in real estate, finance, or business administration
  • It is helpful if the candidate has previously been to Burning Man and/or is familiar with its culture.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Off-playa:  Work is primarily sedentary in nature, no special demands are required.
  • On-playa:  Work is primarily sedentary but will also include the need to find and meet with department representatives who may not be in the vicinity therefore this could include walking or using some form of transportation.  Some of the work will be in outside weather conditions and will be exposed to fumes or airborne particles as well as possible extremes in temperature.
