The Charles E. Via, Jr. Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering (CEE) and the Program in Real Estate at Virginia Tech seek applications to fill a faculty position at the rank of Assistant/Associate Collegiate Professor or Assistant/Associate Professor of Practice. We are seeking candidates motivated to contribute to a collegial, interdisciplinary community in several core mission areas of the university.

 

The Charles E. Via, Jr. has 79 faculty, and a current enrollment of 320 graduate students and over 650 undergraduate students. The department ranks 8th and 9th in undergraduate and graduate education, respectively, among all U.S. civil engineering departments (USN&WR).  With classroom and lab facilities in Blacksburg, Virginia and the National Capital Region of Washington, D.C., the department is one of the largest civil engineering programs in the United States.

 

The Program in Real Estate offers a B.S. Real Estate degree that is a comprehensive, interdisciplinary academic program that builds on existing strengths in five colleges. The major offers Real Estate courses that integrate the material students learn in disciplinary courses such as finance, law, and property management through practical experiences within the academic program. The integration occurs through a university-industry partnership where real estate professionals are actively involved in students’ education. There are over 350 majors and over 60 minors, and the degree is ranked 3rd best undergraduate degree program by Great Business schools and 4th most popular by College Factual.

The primary duties associated with this position will be teaching undergraduate courses offered by the CEE Department and Program in Real Estate related to the areas of land development engineering, commercial real estate development, land entitlement, and professional and legal issues in civil engineering. However, there may be instances when the person in this position could be called upon to teach in one or more disciplinary areas within the CEE Department.

 

A MS degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field is required with a PhD degree preferred.  Significant professional experience or academic accomplishment is required along with a proven ability to work collaboratively; experience with and commitment to interdisciplinary instruction and a willingness to expand disciplinary boundaries to address complex technical and societal challenges.  A demonstrated knowledge of software tools currently used in these areas is expected.

 

This faculty position will be filled at Virginia Tech's main campus, located in Blacksburg, Virginia.  Blacksburg, and the surrounding areas, are consistently ranked among the country's best places to live.  The position start date is August 2021.
