SENIOR PLANNER

We seek a Senior Planner with at least 5 years of experience managing land use planning projects. The candidate should have demonstrated experience in at least one of the following: comprehensive planning under growth management laws; housing; demographic/market analysis; and economic development. Prior consulting experience, particularly related to land use planning issues, is strongly preferred. The position will work on a range of engaging and community-building planning, public policy, and management consulting projects.

Required Skills and Knowledge. The candidate must be knowledgeable about the principles and practices of planning and prepared to contribute in a fast-paced environment.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects effectively to meet deadlines and budgets.
  • Ability to lead project teams, including subconsultants, and manage complex planning studies.
  • Ability to advance our practice, particularly in the realm of equity in planning.
  • Willingness to contribute to BERK as a learning organization, including mentoring colleagues.
  • Ability to gather relevant information and apply creative problem-solving skills to complex, often loosely defined planning problems.
  • Strong relationship-building and listening skills and an ability to engage diverse populations.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for facilitating relationships with existing and potential clients, and for facilitating discussions among decision-makers.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills for preparing and presenting reports and products to policy makers, professionals, and the general public.

Typical Functions

  • Performs advanced planning work and communicates directly with decision-makers and stakeholders.
  • Develops complex comprehensive plans, subarea plans, and zoning or other development regulation amendments.
  • Provides professional planning assistance to communities on varied housing, transportation, land use, parks system planning, or other policy-based projects.
  • Organizes, edits, and peer reviews work products.
  • Conducts research and prepares reports on land use, physical, social, and economic issues.
  • Leads design and implementation of community and stakeholder engagement efforts.
  • Develops non-project State Environmental Policy Act documents in support of comprehensive plans and subarea plans.

Typical Knowledge

  • Strong understanding of growth management laws, in particular Washington’s Growth Management Act.
  • Advanced knowledge of the philosophies, principles, practices, and techniques of planning.
  • Well-developed knowledge of one or more planning disciplines such as affordable housing, economic development, environmental planning, land use, urban design, parks system planning, or other topics.
  • Knowledge of the principles, methodology, and practices of research and data collection.
  • Knowledge of computer hardware and software programs, which may include Microsoft Office, Sketchup, InDesign, and GIS.

To compensate our staff for their exceptional work, we offer a competitive salary, excellent benefits, professional development, and a rewarding and fun work environment. Depending on experience, base salary for this position is $90,000 to $110,000, plus benefits, profit sharing, and merit-based bonuses.

Our 26-person team includes urban planners, strategic planners, policy and financial analysts, economists, and facilitators. We work on a collaborative basis in a team environment. During COVID-19 all staff have been working from home, however this position will be Washington-based in the future.
