Summary
The Commercial Loan Underwriter (CLU) is a full-time permanent position responsible for, but not limited to, completing financial analytics and credit underwriting for new commercial real estate loan requests. This position is a mid-level position responsible for screening new opportunities before pricing approval as well as completing the final underwriting analysis for files moving to closing. The CLU role includes thorough and accurate analyses of historical cash flows, rent rolls, leases, and appraisals to determine the ability of the collateral to debt service, as well as to provide consistent and predictable cash flow with detailed property, location and market analyses. In addition, the CLU will analyze the credit worthiness of the existing and potential borrowers, preparing a thorough written analysis of the loan request and financial condition of the borrower, identifying exceptions to policy and guiding the file through the loan approval and underwriting process.

Essential Functions 
  • Utilizes credit-reporting services to compile reports relating to the credit history of potential loan borrowers
  • Works with Loan Processers to obtain all necessary financial and other documents to underwrite a loan and move it through the approval process
  • Prepares spreadsheets of borrower(s) and guarantor(s) financial statements, analyzes such, provides commentary on financial performance
  • Review pre-LOI packages for credit, collateral requirements and pricing
  • Analyzes and reports repayment capacity of income producing properties
  • Performs personal cash flow analysis utilizing individual tax returns
  • Prepares Credit Approval documents of varying loan types and amounts
  • Researches and analyzes financial data, interprets and prepares reports of financial position with recommendations regarding credit worthiness of the borrower
  • Communicates closely with the Account Executives, Loan Processers, Closers and others regarding the loan pipelines and the status of requests in the pipeline
  • Ensures that the Loan Data Template is accurate, thorough and prepared in a timely manner
  • At times may assist loan officers with credit presentations to the Management or Directors Loan Committee
  • Occasionally will communicate directly with borrowers, CPAs, and internal company comptrollers regarding financial statements, accounting methods, and related information
  • Undertakes special projects related to job function
  • Ensure that the company’s policies and procedures, code of conduct, and regulatory guidelines are strictly complied with
  • Provide assistance to other employees by liaising with them through healthy and positive interactions
  • Continuously update skills by participating in professional training
  • Seek opportunities to improve skills through cross-training offered by the company

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, finance or accounting is preferred
  • Minimum of four (4) years of experience in Commercial Real Estate Cash Flow Analysis, Underwriting, Appraisal or other related discipline.
  • Must be well-organized, accurate, and attentive to detail
  • Must be cooperative and willing to assist coworkers and borrowers on a regular basis
  • Must have effective listening skills demonstrated by the ability to listen to others talk (without interruption), understand them, and then propose solutions or make contributions based on the points made by others
  • Must possess excellent multi-tasking skills and be able to function well under pressure
  • Must be able to remain composed under pressure and respond to borrower and coworker concerns regularly
  • Must have a keen eye for detail and follow instructions to the letter
  • Must be patient and willing to help others in solving problems while maintaining a positive attitude at all times
